Students

Apply To Be A Mentee

Application: Incoming students are required to submit an application consisting of short answer questions, an essay, and family information. Both parts of the application should be submitted online (exceptions will be made in certain situations).

Interview: Following the submission of their applications, qualified applicants will be asked to interview with Minds Matter of Detroit’s Mentee Recruitment Team to gauge interest and assess commitment to the program.

Selection: The selection process is highly competitive and results in a pool of dedicated and talented young adults. Applicants will be notified of their admission decision in the week(s) following their interviews.

Being A Mentee

High school students are admitted as sophomores and spend three years in the program, receiving for free:

  • Weekly one-hour mentorship from two dedicated young professionals
  • Paid tuition for college summer programs at leading universities
  • Three-year writing, math, public speaking, and professional development program
  • Hours of SAT prep from professionals
  • Expert guidance from our affiliate college preparatory partners
  • Full support in the college application process

Student Qualifications 

At Minds Matter Detroit, we look for students who:

  • Maintain a strong overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher
  • Are committed to pursuing a college education
  • Are enrolled, or will enrolled, in grade 10 by the start of session and within the Detroit area
  • Demonstrate strong academic potential, motivation, maturity, and responsibility
  • Are active in extracurricular and/or community activities (part time jobs included)

Your Commitment 

Students are expected to:

  • Attend regular weekly sessions on Saturday mornings throughout the school year
  • Mentees must agree to apply to and attend a recommended college summer program
  • On-time completion of weekly homework assignments
  • Active participation
  • Most importantly, students come to enjoy themselves & have fun!
